The lake was created when Alabama Power completed the building of a hydroelectric dam in 1926 to generate electricity.  At the time it was first built, Lake Martin held claim as the largest man-made reservoir in the country and it remains one of the largest today.

Lake Martin is sparsely developed with homes occupying less than 35% of its shoreline. The Russell family has called this area home since 1846 and was instrumental in the formation of the lake.  Russell Lands owns 280 miles of shoreline and its fundamental corporate philosophy is to preserve the lake's water quality and to ensure that Lake Martin remains the jewel it has been for so many generations.
